School background
Our Campus is situated in the village of Lynemouth, three miles north east of Ashington. Spread over two buildings, children attend our 2 year old and Nursery provision in the Early Years building before moving to the main Campus for Reception to Year 6. Our aim is to create a stimulating, safe and happy environment where every child feels valued and inspired to learn. Every member of staff is dedicated to providing the children in our care with exciting opportunities which encourage their development and we encourage everybody to adopt the Academy LIGHT values of Love, Inclusivity, Goodness, Hope and Truth in the hope of inspiring them to become respectful, well-rounded citizens of the future.
School’s previous lighting situation
William Leech was fitted with outdated fluorescent strip lighting that were producing insufficient output and frequently needed replacing. This was quite difficult and time consuming for the school, which meant that there was some time delays in replacing them. This all came at a cost to the school. The lights had fluorescent glare and the starters kept going causing the lights to flicker. All of these things are the types of things that distract students from learning.
Funding
The School funded the scheme using The Educational Social Enterprise Fund for LED Lighting. The ‘Social Enterprise Fund’ enables schools to install LED Lighting, lower energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint without having to find the upfront capital to purchase the equipment. By simply paying an annual lease amount the scheme generates cash surpluses for the school from day one to be reinvested in educating disadvantaged children. There are no capital costs to the school and the lease repayments are made from the savings, there will always be a surplus left for the school after the lease payments are covered.
End Result
William Leech had 380 old fluorescent lights replaced with brighter more natural LEDS. This has helped improve the schools classroom learning environment and helped the school benefit from reduced energy consumption and requires zero hours of maintenance time changing lamps. These savings can be reinvested into the school.
In July 2018, the Northumberland Church of England Academy converted from an allthrough single academy trust into a multi-academy trust, known as NCEA Trust. The Trust’s aim is to provide an inclusive and diverse learning environment for all its students. The Trust’s Christian ethos is fundamental to all aspects of school life – where all are valued equally and included. All are respected, nurtured, encouraged and enabled to achieve fullness of life.
Over the summer holiday, the Trust replaced almost 5,000 fluorescent light fittings with modern low energy LED luminaires. This has reduced the Trust’s CO2 output by over 285 tonnes, with financial revenue generated from energy savings over the 20-year project lifespan of estimated over £2 million.Alison Alden, Director of Finance and Central Services
