School background
James Knott is situated in the east of Ashington, a short walk from St John’s Church. It is a one form entry campus for children aged between 3 and 11 years. Our popular campus is constantly changing and growing; exciting new prospects are always on the horizon. Our aim is to create a warm, safe and happy environment where every child feels valued and inspired to learn. We pride ourselves on our family ethos and strive for excellence in everything that we do.
James Knott is a stimulating place to learn, our pupils work hard and behave well. We are proud of our focus on traditional values, good manners and enthusiasm for learning. We provide an exciting and varied curriculum with inspiring classrooms that are bright and welcoming, with lively and interesting displays to celebrate children’s work. This well-designed curriculum supports good-quality teaching and encourages the development of skills across all subjects, preparing our children for academic and personal success now and in the future.
School’s previous lighting situation
James Knott was fitted with outdated fluorescent strip lighting that were producing insufficient output and frequently needed replacing. This was quite difficult and time consuming for the school, which meant that there was sometimes delays in replacing them. This all came at a cost to the school. The lights had fluorescent glare and the starters kept going causing the lights to flicker. All of these things are the types of things that distract students from learning.
Funding
The School funded the scheme using The Educational Social Enterprise Fund for LED Lighting. The ‘Social Enterprise Fund’ enables schools to install LED Lighting, lower energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint without having to find the upfront capital to purchase the equipment. By simply paying an annual lease amount the scheme generates cash surpluses for the school from day one to be reinvested in educating disadvantaged children. There are no capital costs to the school and the lease repayments are made from the savings, there will always be a surplus left for the school after the lease payments are covered.
End Result
The James Knott Campus had 260 outdated fluorescent lights replaced with LEDs. The school now has much more natural improved lighting which benefits learning and teaching environment. To add to this the school also reduced energy consumption and requires zero hours of maintenance time changing lamps.
The lighting has made a massive impact on me, on my personal health as a migraine suffers. I always used to have migraines and headaches because of the lighting. Since September I've had no headaches during the week when I've been at school.
I noticed straight away when we came back at the end of the summer holidays how bright the school looked. In fact I thought the care taker had actually painted the whole school. In particular the gloss on the doors was just so shiny, It was absolutely amazing. At the very start every body did comment on how bright everything looked.
